City Centre Residential Projects
City Centre living is still relatively new to Leicester, however a number of leading developments have been completed and established a clear market. Two major city center areas are being developed.
Waterside
Leicester enjoys extensive waterfront to both the River Soar and the Grand Union canal much of it adjacent to the city centre. Waterside, only a 5 minute walk from the prime shopping core, and situated around the historic Roman remains and "Old Town", is the opportunity area for a residentially lead mixed use development capitalizing on the proximity of the water and city centre.
In total around 2,000 homes can be created in as new neighborhood environment. A number of schemes have been completed, or granted planning permission, and sites have been cleared ready for development. Major infrastructure improvements have been approved, received funding and under detailed design.
Wolsey Island
A 30 acre Residential project situated opposite both the Science and Innovation Park and National Space Centre, on a triangular peninsular of land between the river Soar and the Grand Union Canal. The scheme with water on two sides and overlooking the Abbey Park on the third offers an excellent opportunity for new and innovative residential development.
The development concept and Masterplan have been established, and much of the demolition has been undertaken. The first phase, an attractive refurbishment known as the Shoe Factory has been completed.
The project is a good example of the Landowners, EDC and City council working together to bring forward exciting design and concept for residential communities.
