Leicestershire's strong manufacturing tradition has developed a large and successful engineering sector. The sector has a wide range of specialisms including space technology, automotive, aerospace, electronics, high performance engineering, motor sport, rail and logistics.
Companies that have invested in the Leicestershire area have included Caterpillar, Triumph, FKI Brush, Trelleborg and Alstom. Leicestershire has recently seen investment from emerging overseas markets including India and China, with investments made by Jaivel and Asimco.
Engineering companies based in Leicester and Leicestershire benefit from a tradition of research collaboration with De Montfort University and Loughborough University's well respected engineering schools which have worked alongside companies such as Ford, BAE Systems and Rolls Royce.
Leading private sector research and development organisations are also based in Leicestershire, including PERA - the technology based consultancy in Melton Mowbray, and MIRA - the automotive research and development centre based on the outskirts of Hinckley.
