However, despite the high car commuting percentage, the average commuting time is well below the national average at just 23 minutes, so the fuel consumption for the East Midlands region is one of the lowest in the UK. Commuters in the South East use twice as much fuel and London 20% more fuel.*
For those who like others to take the strain, the county council provides 115 local bus services, 80 minibus services, social car schemes and 23 Demand Responsive Transport Services; altogether carrying just under 3 million passengers a year between them. the city council provides hourly bus service from and from the city throughout the county, with 90% of residents living within just an 800 metre walk from bus services
To enjoy the best of both worlds park and ride is avaialble from Meynell's Gorse (off Hinckley Road) into the city with 520 car parking spaces and at the end of 2009 Enderby Park and ride will be operational with an additional 1000 car parking spaces.
